Readmit Policy

A student who is dismissed from any academic program is considered dismissed from the entire University, whether the dismissal be based on academic, clinical, professional or other reasons. The dismissed student may not be considered for re-admission to any program at the University until at least two quarters have elapsed. Further, as most courses are only offered annually, students should be aware that they will not be eligible to restart courses until the courses they need are available. Students who have been dismissed for professional comportment are unlikely to be re-admitted without documented evidence of change in response to the dismissal.

During the period of dismissal, students who wish to return to Bastyr University should cultivate experiences that demonstrate remediation and improvement have occurred. Students must be able to document this through transcripts, letters from appropriate practitioners, etc, and must be able to submit these documents at the time of re-application. Student behavior will also be evaluated during the timeframe of a student’s dismissal, and any behaviors that may negatively impact Bastyr University will be reviewed as part of the re-admission process. After review of the supporting documents and student behavior, if the information does not meet expectations for remediation and improvement, the dismissed student may not proceed with the re-admission process. All re-admission decisions are considered final and are not eligible for appeal.

To initiate consideration for re-admission to the University, the dismissed student must submit a re-admission application form at least 90 days before the beginning of the quarter. Submission does not guarantee re-admission, and decisions regarding if and/or when a student may re-admit will be based on a review process by the Office of the Registrar, the Provost, the Vice President of Student Affairs, and their originally admitted Academic Department. Approval from individual departments does not guarantee re-admission, and should be viewed as milestones towards re-admission. The steps for review and approval are summarized below with timelines that students must abide by to proceed through the re-admission process.

  • If a student has been dismissed due to behavioral reasons:
    •  The Office of the Provost will communicate with them within 5 business days to request an interview.
    • Students must respond within 5 business days and set an interview date within the following 5 business days. Students who do not meet this timeline are not guaranteed review for the upcoming registration period.
    • The Office of the Provost will notify the Office of the Registrar within 5 business days of their decision. Reminder: Decision does not guarantee re-admission. Student moves on to the next step.
  • If a student has been dismissed for academic reasons and/or has received approval to move forward with the re-admission process by the Office of the Provost:
    • The Office of the Registrar will review the student for holds, transferred courses, re-take courses; will develop an academic plan for the student, and notify the original Academic Department of their recommendation while providing all supporting documentation (transcripts, personal statement, academic plan) within 10 business days or two (2) weeks.
    • The Academic Department will conduct a department-specific interview and proctor any necessary exams (70% passing grade required) within 10 business days or two (2) weeks.
    • Students will be notified of the decision regarding their re-admission status once all departments have given their approval.
