Academic Freedom Rights

Bastyr University recognizes and supports the rights of students to learn and express themselves within an environment of academic freedom. Students have the right to question teaching, express opinions, and present diverse ideas without fear or threat of reprisal. As with all freedom, there is also responsibility. In class, the questions, ideas, and opinions must be relevant to the focus and intent of the class. Outside of class, gatherings and postings must follow standard University policy. Bastyr University values and supports open inquiry and expression, and respectful engagement with individuals expressing diverse opinions. Academic freedom does not extend to speech or expression that is considered hate speech or any other violation of policy or law.
